Embedded Software Developer

Ireland

I first came across Moog when I saw an ad for an R&D Technician in a National newspaper, which was back in 1990 – when employment was difficult to find in Ireland. I came down to Cork and was interviewed. I didn't know much about the company before the interview (it was pre-internet days) but during the interview I knew it was a good place to work. The people I met, and there were several, were very relaxed and open. During my undergraduate degree, I studied Control Systems for 2 years and this was a great fit to Moog Ireland's product development, motor controllers. I guessed there would be scope for career progression, so I joined in October 1990 – and I'm still here.

I am now an embedded software developer. There are a number of things I enjoy in my job, the creativity of designing, developing software for motor controllers and seeing them control motion, such as a flight simulator actuator. I enjoy working with teams, and I've been involved in many. I enjoy travelling and I have been lucky and have been able to relocate to the US. This has been really good, living in a different culture, getting to know new people, etc.

I have many good memories of my time here at Moog, but the one that stands out in my mind is when we did the first system testing of a Flight Simulator drive at CAE. Up to that point we had moved the actuator on a set of wheels along the ground, but during this testing I actually got to sit inside the simulator while it was in motion, which was very cool.
